  1. A bluish-white, hard, crystalline metallic
  2. element, very heavy and infusible, symbol Os,
  3. atomic number 76, relative atomic mass 190.2.
  4. It is used for lamp filaments, with iridium
  5. to form a very hard alloy suitable for
  6. pen-nibs and fine machine bearings, and as a
  7. catalyst. It is found in platinum-bearing
  8. river sands, and with iridium in osmiridium.
  9. Heated in air, it gives off a pungently
  10. irritating poisonous vapour. It was
  11. discovered in 1803 by British chemist
  12. Smithson Tennant (1761-1815).
